Before and After Injectables

Can you minimize bruising and swelling from injectables? Is there a magic combination of products to use before and after filler injections? While bruising and swelling can’t be controlled, we know these products can speed up your recovery and minimize bruising and swelling. Dr. Bomer always recommends the following products to take before and after injections.

What are Dr. Kelly Bonmer's recommendations for Before and After filler and Botox injections?

Before your Injectable Appointment:

One week prior to your treatment - avoid taking aspirin, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications (Advil, Motrin, Aleve or Ibuprofen), Gingko Biloba, Vitamin E or fish oil supplements. These may increase bruising and bleeding at the injection site.

If you require a pain remedy, it is ok to take Tylenol.

If you are prone to cold sores on your lips, start taking Acyclovir or Valtrex 1 day prior to filler injections. Take for a total of 4 days to prevent an outbreak following lip injections.

Important - Let your provider know in advance if you are on a prescription blood thinner.

Diet - Adding spinach, kale, and celery to your diet will boost your Vitamin K and help reduce the possibility of bruising / swelling.

Avoid eating fish, apples or large quantities of garlic before and several days after your appointment.

Supplements - Arnica & Bromelain and Topical Care: Arnica and Bromelain supplements have been shown to reduce discomfort, bruising and swelling from injectable procedures such as Botox and fillers. Arnica pills should be started the day before or the day of treatment and should be continued until bruising has resolved.

Apply VitaMedica Arnica + K Cream to areas most affecting by bruising (around the mouth and under the eyes) for several days before your injection appointment.

After Injections:

You may experience minor pain, inflammation, tenderness, swelling, redness, and or bleeding and bruising. Swelling and bruising will usually resolve over a period of 2 weeks. Any bruising may be covered up with makeup or we recommend the amazing Colorescience Mineral Corrector Palette.

Ice - Apply ice immediately after filler. and apply ice for 15 minutes every hour on the first day. Continue to ice for swelling and soreness for as long as necessary – especially in the morning.

Continue taking VitaMedica Arnica and Bromelain which will help with swelling and bruising – take as long as these are a concern. Apply VitaMedica Arnica + K Cream to areas that are bruised or swollen.

Tips for After Injectables:

  • Do NOT work out on the same day – the next day is okay.
  • Do NOT have any type of facial massage or place your face in a facial cradle for a massage for 2 weeks after injection.
  • Do NOT wear swim goggles for two weeks after filler around the eyes or cheeks.
  • Do NOT use Retin-A or strong Retinols the night after filler.  It’s okay to start again the day after.
  • Do NOT take ibuprofen or aspirin for 36 hours after filler.
  • Do NOT have an important social event for 10 days after filler. You will look your best after filler at 3-4 weeks after injection.
