Frequently Asked Questions about Exfoliation Accelerator
The ZO Exfoliation Accelerator at times is pretty stingy to my skin, I also apply Tretinoin and am considering increasing the strength of the retinol. Since my skin is redness-prone, I’d like to avoid anything that causes redness or irritation. Should I continue using the product, skip it to every other day or stop using it entirely?Â
The ZO Skin Health Exfoliation Accelerator is a glycolic acid serum. Because it is an acid (glycolic is the most anti-aging Alpha Hydroxy Acid) it can sting when applied to skin that has been exfoliated from other products or is cracked from dryness or inflammation. It is a helpful tool to advance rejuvenation of the skin and it is normal for it to tingle/sting for the first minute after application. It is best to continue using as long as prolonged redness does not occur. Momentary redness after the application is acceptable as long as it calms down after a few minutes. Ultimately, the routine application of glycolic acid will not only rejuvenate your skin, but it will also create a skin that is less reactive to the environment and less prone to redness. The skin will become more hardy and resilient. If the stinging is intense and lasts longer, the glycolic serum may be applied every other day until the skin has built its ability to tolerate it every day.
Retinol is our other strong rejuvenator. Part of its action is to exfoliate the skin. This happens during the night and then in the morning when an acidic product may be applied, these products can sting because the skin has been exfoliated with the retinol. This is okay as long as the skin calms down in a few minutes. It is important to apply a moisturizer that your skin likes to aid in the hydration and occlusion of the skin barrier.
If you want to increase your Tretinoin to .1%, this will lead to even more exfoliated skin in the morning and less ability for it to tolerate the synergy with the glycolic. Since you are tolerating the .05% tretinoin with calm skin in the morning, it would we reasonable to increase to 1%, but it is advised that you continue the glycolic also. To be successful in gaining acclimation to a strong rejuvenation skincare program, it is important to learn the balance in your skin between the actions of these two big rejuvenators – glycolic and retinol/tretinoin.

This stuff works great when used before Zo retinol products. I use it in the evening before Zo Wrinkle Texture and Repair or Zo Radical Night Repair

I was used to Glycogent and thought I was not going to like the new version but I did. This product does a great job at removing gunk from my skin.
