Frequently Asked Questions

What are the anticipated reactions to this strong retinol?
Redness, flakiness, dryness, burning, or stinging are all normal, anticipated reactions when starting retinol. To minimize this you should slowly acclimate by starting slow and increasing the days you apply it over time. A good regimen is start two times a week and stay on that schedule for a month, then increase the number of days to 3 days. Increase the days until you can use it every night.

Watch Dr. Bomer’s video below for tips on Retinol application.

Why do I need to apply SPF while on retinol?
Retinol helps exfoliate the outer layer of your skin making it susceptible to sunburn and sun damage. If you do not use an SPF 30+ you might harm your skin. Shop ZO sunscreens to protect your skin.

Because retinol can be drying, ZO recommends you use an advanced moisturizer like ZO Renewal Creme or ZO Hydrating Creme to minimize dryness.

The ZO Skin Health Wrinkle and repair contains Retinol.

Retinol is our most powerful skin rejuvenator. It exfoliates, tightens pores, thickens the dermis (deeper layer of the skin), reduces wrinkles, and increases the ability of the skin to build and maintain higher levels of hyaluronic acid.

Retinol requires acclimation initially and can cause irritation, dryness, itchiness, peeling and overall sensitivity if not apply correctly in accordance to your skin’s sensitivity.

If you are new to retinol, you should start with a low concentration and when the skin gets acclimated then you can work your way to something of higher concentration.

Directions for use:

  1. Cleanse the skin and apply Retinol to DRY skin-Use Retinol at night only
  2. Start with 1/2 pea size of Retinol and apply on outer face first and then work inward, avoid the corners of the eyes, nose and mouth, wait few minutes and then apply moisturizer.
  3. Apply product twice a week and slowly increase to every night over a month or two as your skin get acclimated and gradually increasing the amount of product to ½ pea size to 1 pump.
  4. ALWAYS use a sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher during the day when using retinol. Retinol increases sun sensitivity and irritation can occur.
  5. When skin gets acclimated, AM usage can be effective, but only using it correctly can give you rejuvenating effects.
  6. The neck reacts differently to retinol compared to the face. Side effects are itchy and red pumps when scratched, peeling, dryness, and redness. Retinol can rejuvenate the neck as well when tolerated. Be careful when starting retinol on the face to not pull it onto the neck without it being a planned event. Proceed with gentle acclimation over months and careful not to scratch, if it starts to itch. Scratching will create red pumps that take about 2 weeks to resolve.

Watch Dr. Bomer’s Anti-Aging Retinol video and learn how you should apply Retinol products.

Can I use a Vitamin C moisturizer after using ZO Texture + Wrinkle Repair?

Yes, you can use a Vitamin C moisturizer. If it is a serum or thinner consistency apply it before the Texture + Wrinkle Repair. If it is thick and emollient, apply it after Texture + Wrinkle Repair dries.

  6. Question

    doraadee23

What to do if you like the product but might have used too much the night before (2 pumps) and now skin is peeling? I noticed a difference after the first day and would like to continue use despite the peeling, how long should I wait before reapplying? Thanks in advance !

1-Only apply the product on DRY skin. So be sure your skin is completely dry before applying it.
2-Peeling is expected but this product requires acclimating since it has a strong retinol. You should start slowly 2 times a week, at night. Stay on 2 times a week until you see less irritation, then increase to 3 times a week and so on until you can apply it every night.
3-Since your skin is irritated now, start with the 2 times a week regimen. Wash your skin, completely dry it and apply. One pump should be enough for the entire face.
4-Have you watched Dr. Bomer’s Retinol video? She goes over her suggested retinol application.

I was used to Retamax and was upset when they changed the name, but it is the same product. Strong! My face always reacts to it but after a while of use it looks so much clearer!
